At 1 o’clock the dining hall began to empty out, and VP Flickerton gathered all the competitors back together to escort them back down through the bowels of the school to the arena. On the playing field Flickerton separated the weres and vamps. “The rest of you can relax, sit this one out, and let your food go down. As for you lot,” she turned to the supernaturals she’d chosen, “this is your chance to determine, once and for all, who’s the most powerful supernatural – the were or the vampire.” She smiled, her red eyes twinkling mischievously. “I know you two groups like to fight over that a lot. Personally I think fire elementals are the most powerful. One good nuclear fireball will obliterate the lot of you. Bit I digress,” she flipped a hand as though she hadn’t just made that terrifying statement, “this is a very important part of the Nightmare Games. Another obstacle course for you to move through, but with a difference. There are sections that can only be completed if you work together. If you weres really do want to prove yourselves stronger, tougher and faster than the vamps, you’ll have to cooperate.” She swept the assembled children with her fiery gaze.

The kids nodded. Some obviously did not like that idea.

“This race also contains a fight at the end, where each of you weres will face a vampire, and vice versa. These are Kranquoix players and assistants from the Nocturnal University who have been chosen especially for this purpose. This is a one-on-one battle – you will be alone with your opponent. You may use any powers you have, but as soon as you’re able to deliver the killing blow, the fight will stop. I’d rather we didn’t fill the infirmary at this point in time.” Flickerton rubbed her hands together again, sending more sparks shooting into the air. “Any questions? Good. Then let’s get started.” She directed everyone over to the side of a hill where a large portal appeared, leading down into the ground. “When you reach the room containing the starting line, please line up in an orderly fashion, thank you.”

All the competitors descended into the cool, dark Earth via a steep stone staircase. They followed another tunnel that sloped down, and when they reached the antechamber with the line of the floor, they assembled. Because there were so many of them – half of all the Nightmare Games competitors were weres and vamps – they were rather squashed in.

“Yes, it is a bit cosy,” Flickerton’s voice reached them from a hidden speaker, “but you all won’t make it through that door at once, anyway.”

This doorway was sealed with stone and only wide enough for three people.

“On your marks … get set … go!”

The stone rolled aside with a loud grinding noise.

Alice didn’t bother trying to run. She shifted to mist and wafted into the air, along with most of the other vampires. Weres shifted into their full forms and scrambled through the doorway.
